EM and KNF Workshop in Myanmar

THE UNION OF MYANMAR HOSTS A KNF AND EM WORKSHOP

Our little network held a workshop on Kyusei Nature Farming and EM Technology for the second time at the CARTC, in the Union of Myanmar over the period 02 – 04 December 2009. The participants were from the regions around the EM production units located in Yedashe, Kalaw, Mandalay and Pathein. Over 40 participants gathered for this event and included members from the Myanmar Agriculture Service (MAS), CARTC staff, farmers and from the private sector. In addition, we also had guests from the MAS and our most senior member Professor Dr Cho Cho Myint, Ex Vice Rector of the Agricultural University.

The workshop began with greetings from APNAN, which explained the basics of EM Technology, Nature Farming and its concepts. Thereafter, Prof Dr Cho Cho Myint stated the history of Nature Farming in Myanmar and the activities that had been undertaken over 19 years, and the enthusiasm that had been generated along the way. MAS staff demonstrated examples of EM use and also the prospects of supporting staff through field visits. This was followed by presentations from the four factory regions, where some trials had been conducted, especially in Kallow and Mandalay. APNAN encouraged the participation of farmers in a discussion.

The next day began with APNAN illustrating the use of EM in rice farming, which is very important for the Union of Myanmar. Participants were engaged in lively discussions and they stated the potential of using EM in some difficult situations

The final day was based on a presentation by the Principal of the CARTC, and visits to field located near the CARTC, where the workshop was held. The finale of the workshop was a sumptuous Myanmar lunch, and there were requests for similar workshops in the future.

APNAN will organize them in consultation with our sponsors in the future.

International Workshop 2010 Feb

APNAN WORKSHOP 2010

APNAN will be organizing the usual workshop on Kyusei Nature Farming and EM technology, at the Sara Buri Center, Thailand, from 22 – 25 February, 2010.

EM in Sri Lanka

APNAN visited a farmer living near the EM unit at Homagama in Sri Lanka. The farmer established his home garden using EM, and this plot of 320 sq. meters has over 15 types of vegetables and fruits for home consumption.

In the early days, he applied chemicals to his allotment – especially for chilies. However he noticed that with time, yield declined. On a visit to the EM unit, he was told of the technology, which he adopted. At present, he is an avid enthusiast of EM and Nature Farming, and over the past 6 months, his fields have produced greater yields, which have made him happy and healthy.

Although a beginner, he is a real enthusiast of EM – and is reading as much literature as possible. The EM unit is also happy about this and will use these fields to hold workshops for the people of the area to promote EM technology.

Nature Farming and EM technology workshop in LAO PDR

The Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Vientiane organized a workshop on Nature Farming and EM in conjunction with APNAN in Vientiane on 26^th and 27^th October, 2009. There were 31 participants, consisting of students, teachers and farmers from the municipality. The basics of EM technology and Nature Farming were taught at the workshop – including making EM solutions, and its use in crop and animal production and in sanitation.
The program was also strengthened by the presentations by two farmers who practice Nature Farming in Lao PDR. The participants were eager to learn and many questions were raised – and all agreed to use the technologies learnt to produce food and clean the environment.

ORGANIC OIL PALM IN MALAYSIA – A PILOT PROJECT OF JAMOF

JAMOF, our active partner in Johor Malaysia has teamed up with the Malaysia Rubber Board of Johor to initiate trials with EM in 2008. The pilot study conducted in 0.45 ha produced excellent results and hence in 2009 the project has been expanded to over 30 ha!!
The project initiated this year applied EM Bokashi and activated EM・1 – and the plants that received our EM and Bokashi are much greener than those receiving chemical fertilizers!!! We are looking forward to the yield reports and will keep you updated!!
