THE water within a 100m radius off the Gurney Drive coast in Penang is now less murky and smelly, thanks to the 200,000 effective microorganism (EM) mud balls which were thrown into the sea on Aug 8.
State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said the mud balls had also helped to break down the sludge and reduce the growth of algae in the sea.
“Sludge has been significantly reduced as can be seen from the measurement tape placed by the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID). It has reduced by 10cm.

More apologies to Mother Earth
Dr.Higa(Left) and H E the Chief
Minister YAB Tuan Lim Guan
Eng(right)
A ceremony was launched on 8th August, 2009 in the State of Penang, to make people aware of the environment and its importance. The event was aptly called "One million Apologies to Mother Earth." The principal objective of the event was to enhance or improve the quality of the rivers and seacoasts in Penang, which at once time was called the Pearl of the Orient, but with time had been polluted primarily due to human activities. Thus the project used EM technology to clean these waters and the State of Penang wished to be the leaders to show the world the benefits of this simple but effective technology.
The project paid emphasis to the use of mud balls, and H E the Chief Minister YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng inaugurated the launching ceremony on the 8th August 2009, in the presence of Professor Dr.Teruo Higa at 0830 Hrs.
The participants threw 250,000 mud balls made with EM into the Gurney Drive bay. In total, the participants added 1.2 million mud balls to rivers of Penang and there were over 25000 people participating.
The entire event was a great success - and thus the director of the Penang State Drainage and Irrigation Department promised to use mud balls on a regular basis. He claimed " We will throw mud balls into rivers in stages over a six-month period" !!!! This will be done until the water quality of the Penang and Juru rivers are improved from Class 3 to Class 2as per the standards adopted in Malaysia.
We are sure that this project will be successful and will update the information with time.

Balling mud for good cause
The below is the newspaper article from The Star, in Malaysia. (4 August) EM activites in Malaysia is very very hot!!
IT was a messy job but it was all done in the name of saving Mother Earth.
Forty teams had loads of fun making some 10,000 EM (effective micro-organism) mud balls in the EM Mud Ball-Making Contest organised by the Auto-City Group in Penang on July 27.
Each group was given an hour to produce as many of the EM enriched mud balls as possible. Everyone tried to stay clean in the process but it was a tough task with streaks of the mud getting onto clothes and faces.
The team led by Yeoh Yee Hong, which made 446 mud balls, won the top prize. They collected a RM500 food voucher. Second and third placing went to teams headed by Head Ai Khee (415) and Fong Ling Shin (412) respectively.

EM activity in Bhutan
The SAP in the Kingdom started with 6 pilot schools. Today there are 1600 schools incorporated in the project from a total number of 525 within the Kingdom. The program has integrated Nature Farming with crops, swine, poultry, cattle and aquaculture. The approach to these projects is totally organic with the use of EM technology. EM technology has been taken up very positively in terms of educating the parents and communities by the students.
The main objective of the program are
· To inculcate the dignity of labor among the younger generation.
· To transfer the agriculture technology to parents and community.
· To supplement the class room teaching with practicals for scienceand geography lessons.
· To encourage self help groups for producing their own vegetables for hostel and generate employment in future. Some of the students will become future educated farmers, who will use EM for gardening.
We expect the students become good EM technical instructors within the Kingdom through this project.

How to make EM RW (Fermented Rice Rinsed water)
Materials %of the total volume for 10 little
・EM1 3% 0.3 little
・Molasses 3% 0.3little
・Rice rinse water 94% 9.4little
*Rice rinse water should be used at fresh. One should use it as soon as one gets it.
Process of preparationjavascript:void(0)
1. Mix molasses and EM in rice rinse water
2. Pour the mixture into a clean plastic container or drum, close tightly and keep in a warm place. (idially 20℃ to 35℃)
3. After second day, gas maymay form as a result of the fermentation process. Loosen the cap to release gas generated a few times during the fermentation process.
4. EMRW is ready to use, 7-10 days after preparing it. When it ready, the pH drops below 4.0(ideally it has a pH around 3.5). It has also a sweet –sour smell like EM・1 and has changed color from yellowwish brown color.
*There is a wide range of variations of EMRW as a result of fermentation due to materials and conditions.
